When the U.S. Army came to the area now known as Oak Ridge (56,000 acres split between Roane County and Anderson County) in 1942 for the Manhattan Project, 1,000 families were moved. The area in Roane County became the location of K-25 and X-10 (now ORNL). The Wheat community was one of those displaced and is home to the Wheat Cemetery.
